Everybody Welcome on
Why Philosophy and Spirituality? If Philosophy is sometimes thought of as a strictly Western product, our approach here will be different: we shall be journeying from Greece to India, via Europe and back. It has been our wish to add to the classical philosophical works new texts taken from living spirituality, past and present. Our approach to Philosophy is neither: - educational: we do not want to limit ourselves to the preparation of exams. - purely academic: we are not interested in commenting or dabbling in erudition for the sake of it. The importance of Philosophy lies in its living contribution to global culture. We want the word philosopher to recover its true meaning of lover of wisdom, which is another word for spirituality. New Horizons and New Enquiries The purpose of this site is to work through the syllabus in Philosophy of the Classe Terminale in a new way. The Classe Terminale is the last year of three in the Lycée preparing for the French Baccalauréat. This would correspond to the second year sixth form in Britain (PU2) and to the last year in High School in the United States of America. Of course, Philosophy is rarely studied before University in the Anglo-Saxon world, although there now exists an A-level in Philosophy in the British Educational system. Building a Bridge The syllabus proposed to French pupils sitting the Baccalauréat would roughly correspond to a Freshers' Introduction to Philosophy in an Anglo-American College or University. The difference is of course that few students in England and North America ever receive an introduction to Philosophy as it is studied in continental Europe. The purpose of translating this site into English is to remedy just that and to attempt to build a bridge between philosophers in Europe and in the Anglo-Saxon world. In addition this site aims at broadening the views of Philosophy as it is taught in France for the benefit of students, academics and teachers. On the site Philosophy and Spirituality you will find: - A Philosophy Course, complete and covering the full syllabus of the Baccalaréat, both scientific, economic and literary, and preparing for further studies in Philosophy.
Of course, since the translation of this site has only just begun only the lessons stated in the left-hand column are as yet available to the English reader.
